When My Life Points Back to You
September began with one question: What am I building? Thirty days later, we arrive at the question beneath all the others: Where does it all point?
“In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”

September began with one question:
What am I building?
Thirty days later, the question has become deeper.
We've examined our foundations and values. We've confronted patterns that should not continue. We've considered the faith, wisdom, traditions, and lessons we want to transfer. We've asked whether the people around us are becoming stronger and whether what we're building could continue without our constant presence.
And now we arrive at the question beneath all the others:
Where does it all point?
Jesus tells us to let our light shine so people see what comes through our lives—and glorify the Father.
That is the destination.
Not a life so impressive that people cannot forget us, but a life so surrendered that people encounter something about God through us.
Maybe legacy is not ultimately about leaving something behind.
Maybe it is about leaving evidence behind.
Evidence that God restores.
Evidence that obedience matters.
Evidence that cycles can end.
Evidence that generosity multiplies.
Evidence that faith survives difficult seasons.
Evidence that ordinary people surrendered to God can change what reaches the generations behind them.
Your name does not have to last forever.
But what God did through your surrendered life can.
Reflect over the entire month.
What am I building that can outlive me?
What have I decided will stop with me?
What will continue through me?
Who am I intentionally developing?
What wisdom am I transferring?
What doors am I opening behind me?
What evidence of God's faithfulness am I preserving?
Where do I still need to release control?
What do I want the people coming behind me to know about God because they knew me?
If my life is a message, what does it currently say?
Write your Legacy Declaration.
Begin with:
“Because God allowed me to live, I pray that…”
Don't write only about what you hope to accomplish.
Write about:
The people you want to become stronger.
The cycles you want to end.
The faith you want to transfer.
The doors you want to open.
The wisdom you want to leave.
The love you want people to remember.
The evidence of God you want your life to reveal.
Date your declaration.
Keep it somewhere you can return to it each September and ask:
“Does the life I'm currently living still align with the legacy I said I wanted to build?”
Today’s Prayer
Father,
Thank You for the life You've given me.
Thank You for every person, gift, lesson, opportunity, relationship, resource, mistake You've redeemed, door You've opened, and assignment You've entrusted to me.
Help me build what matters.
Let my faith outlive me.
Let my wisdom continue through others.
Let the people I pour into become people who pour into others.
Let the doors You open through my life remain open for those coming behind me.
Give me courage to break what should not continue and wisdom to preserve what should.
Keep me faithful in ordinary moments, humble in visible ones, generous with what I know, and willing to release what was never mine to control.
When my work is finished, I don't need everything to carry my name.
I simply want my life to have carried Yours.
May those who come after me know You more deeply, believe more boldly, live more freely, love more intentionally, and build more faithfully because I chose to follow You.
When people encounter the fruit of my life, let it lead them back to the One who produced it.
Let my life point back to You.
